Singapore Road Tax Rates Explained

Road tax is a recurring cost every car owner in Singapore must pay, typically every 6 months. Unlike one-time fees such as the ARF or COE, road tax is an ongoing expense for as long as you keep the car on the road.

For petrol and diesel vehicles, the rate is based on engine capacity measured in cubic centimetres (cc). The system is progressive — a 1,598cc car (the Cat A ceiling) pays roughly S$742 per year, while a 2,000cc car pays about S$1,206. This jump is one reason why the 1,600cc threshold between Category A and Category B matters so much to buyers.

Electric vehicles use a separate formula based on motor power output in kilowatts, which generally results in lower road tax than an equivalent petrol car. Factor road tax into your total cost of ownership to see how this recurring expense adds up over a full 10-year COE cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is road tax calculated in Singapore?
For petrol cars, road tax is based on engine capacity (cc) using a progressive formula. The first 600cc is charged at S$0.782 per cc per 6 months, with rates increasing for each subsequent bracket up to S$3.730 per cc above 3,000cc. The result is your 6-monthly road tax payable.
How much is road tax for electric vehicles?
EVs are taxed based on power output (kW) instead of engine capacity. The rate is S$0.782 per 0.25 kW for the first 110 kW, with higher rates for additional power. EVs generally pay less road tax than equivalent petrol cars.
When is road tax due and how do I pay?
Road tax is renewed every 6 or 12 months. You can renew online via the LTA OneMotoring portal. Your car must pass inspection (for vehicles over 3 years old) and have valid insurance before road tax can be renewed.
Does vehicle age affect road tax?
No — road tax is based purely on engine capacity (or power output for EVs). Vehicle age does not change the road tax amount, unlike ARF or PARF which are time-dependent.
